Interactions between Differential Object Marking and Definiteness in Standard and Heritage Romanian

چکیده
The observation that not all grammatical realizations in heritage languages can be attributed to transfer from a dominant language has been emphasized several recent works. This paper provides further arguments this direction Romanian. As opposed standard Romanian, the Romanian data examined here do exhibit restriction which blocks overt definiteness on differentially marked object (DOM), when latter is unmodified but interpreted as definite. Moreover, there appear differences between differential marker and (other) prepositions it comes interactions with definiteness. It shown preservation of cannot reduced transfer; some at stake, namely Serbian Russian are determinerless, nominals being used bare regardless their syntactic function. turn give support theory under must structurally set aside prepositions. If spell out P projection, complex internal structure certain classes objects, project least DP. structural complexity for DOM transparent other Romance languages, where equally obligatory surface, if definite interpretation intended. Thus, DOM-overt setting follows predictable paths variation.

Affectedness and Differential Object Marking in Spanish
In this study we investigate the impact of affectedness on the diachronic development of Differential Object Marking (DOM) in Spanish. DOM in Spanish synchronically depends on (i) the referential features of the direct object, such as animacy and referentiality, and (ii) the semantics of the verb. Several studies have also shown that the diachronic development of DOM proceeds along the Animacy ...
متن کاملDifferential Object Marking and Topicality in Tigrinya
Various researchers have used coding strategies such word order, case and pronominal marking to predict asymmetries between different object functions and/or information structure roles such as topics and foci. Moreover, some studies have also suggested that there exists a correlation between different grammatical functions and information structure roles. This paper analyzes object marking in ...
متن کاملClitic doubling and differential object marking
This work follows the progression of a grammatical construction that unifies the Romanian accusative preposition pe with a coreferential pronominal clitic, together forming the cd-pe construction. On the basis of historical texts, it is argued that these two grammatical phenomena evolved into a clause-level construction with a dedicated semantics and pragmatics in the modern language. A corpus ...

15 صفحه اولPe-marking and Referential Persistence in Romanian
The fact that in Romanian a direct object is sometimes morphologically marked by the particle pe and sometimes not is a long attested phenomenon. Diverse studies on Differential Object Marking (DOM) explained most occurrences of pe as a case marker by means of the features animacy, definiteness, and specificity. The only cases left unexplained are those in which a direct object realized as an u...
